(Sorrentino, 2013). In our facility, creating an efficient model of preceptor program that helped nurses to function independently that was also cost effective .Benner’s novice to expert research describes nurses’ moves from rule governed behavior to an intuitive, automatic response. Ongoing development of the orientation program, preceptor development, preceptor assignments are included in the role of orientation and education coordinator of the unit. Developing a preceptor program for the unit was a need for the hospital and Benner’s model was used as per the decision by the nurse management and education department. Preceptors were chosen on the basis of their performance and documentation compliance according to unit standards. Documentation of compliance is validated using chart audits. Nurses who wanted to be preceptors also had to get approval from 3 peers and they write a 500 word essay stating why they want to be preceptors and had to attend an eight hour preceptor class.

 

Preceptor education is based on Benner’s concept of framework and how they can support new nurses during their orientation process. They also meet every two weeks to meet with the manager and unit educators to discuss their progress. Preceptors and the new novice nurses also have debriefing sessions. Charge nurses also help with assignments and unit supervisors help with scheduling. Preceptors are recognized for spending their time and their commitment, precepting new nurses is an activity that can be included for clinical ladder. Good communications between leadership, education department, preceptors and new nurses have helped in the success of this nurse orientation program. Physicians were also involved as they have taken initiatives in teaching some classes for the new residents. For stimulating nurses and to help with professional practice model, nursing clinical advancement programs are also utilized. It is similar to the program that is used in many hospitals nationwide .In order to improve quality of patient care outcomes, and to attract, retain competent nurses, nursing clinical advancement (NCAP) is in progress in many facilities. Using engaging characters and interesting stories, shows like ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘Sis the Science Kid’ motivate children to learn while other specialty channels like Animal Planet and Discovery Channel, also provide educational content in an entertaining format. Some shows provide incidental educational value. For instance, University of Southern California and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention present annual Sentinel Award to TV shows with story lines that educate viewers to make better health and safety choices.

Culture:

Television also provides cultural experiences which can help broaden viewers’ perspectives and increase appreciation and tolerance for various lifestyles. Shows like ‘National geographic’, ‘The Amazing Race’ and ‘House Hunters’ focus on life in parts of the world that may be unfamiliar to most Americans. Even shows which concentrate their efforts in the U.S. like ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’ and ‘House Hunters’ can improve cultural awareness by highlighting the foods, housing trends and customs in different regions of the country.

Social or Interactive:

While television is usually criticized for isolating people, it can also bring them together, as demonstrated by popularity of Super Bowl parties and events in which people congregate around television set. During month-long telecast of March Madness, fans gather – at work, in bars and other places – to compare brackets, view college basketball games and discuss results. Additionally, few TV shows invite viewers to share their opinions by calling in or posting comments.

Criminal Exposure:

The medium of television serves to expose criminal activity. Love Lucy is one of the most legendary and popular situation comedies of all time, maintaining its ability to charm audiences even half a century later.  The show follows the life of Lucy Ricardo, a zany housewife in 1950s New York City as she attempts to break into show business, defy her husband or just keep life interesting through a series of schemes and mishaps.  Showcasing the exceptional comedic talents of its star, Lucille Ball, the show has a timeless ability to entertain.  In addition to its entertainment value, the show’s 1950s setting provides a rich point of cultural critique.  It has been accused of reinforcing patriarchal norms and being degrading to women.  In viewing the show with a contemporary perspective, these accusations have some undeniable legitimacy.  Lucy and her best friend Ethel are often consumed by petty, material desires; they are frequently depicted as incompetent; their messes are usually cleaned up by their more sensible, authoritative husbands.  Still, what messages in I Love Lucy speak the loudest?  Do Lucy Ricardo’s never-quite-successful schemes as a housewife overshadow Lucille Ball’s professional success as a businesswoman, comedian and actress?  Despite the show’s outward adherence to some of the patriarchal ideology of the times, I Love Lucy was a vehicle for Lucille Ball to empower women, both within and outside the world of the show.

SAILS Exam – Information Literacy

Knowing how to thoroughly research a topic is extremely important while achieving your education. You may be asked to support your information with peer-reviewed scholarly resources, but how can you find this type of resource? The Ashford University Library allows you to search through different avenues to find the requested types of resources. You can narrow your search by the author, year published, title, subject, and also by indicating what type of resource you are looking for. You even have access to a librarian if you need some guidance in finding more resources on your topic.

This week, you will take the Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills (SAILS) Exam. This exam is not graded, and your results are anonymous. The exam will exit from your screen immediately after completion, and you will not receive feedback or results. This is a nationally-normalized, standardized exam for students in universities all over the United States. The results of this assessment will guide Ashford University in developing the best possible library resources and research methodologies training. Results will be published (in aggregate) on Ashford’s assessment website. Your participation is voluntary, so thank you for your participation. Click on the link to access the SAILS Exam.

After completing the SAILS Exam, in a two- to three-paragraph response:
